Let’s dive into two powerhouse techniques that can supercharge your hypnotherapy sessions: Anchors and Chunking. One brings clients back to their learning in an instant, the other connects the dots they didn’t even know were there.

Together, they’re like peanut butter and jelly—or, more accurately, like frogs and fish in a classification system. Let me explain. 🐸🐠

Anchors: The Mental Shortcut Tool
Imagine you’re trying to help a client remember a breakthrough moment from your last session—the tear-filled epiphany where they realized their value isn’t tied to how many emails they can answer in a day (a hypothetical example, obviously, and not something I’ve personally struggled with… this week).

An anchor works like a shortcut to bring them right back to that emotional state. It’s a stimulus—a word, touch, or image—that evokes a mental, emotional, or physiological response. Think of Pavlov’s bell, but way less creepy.

Practical Example: Anchoring Calm
- During a relaxation induction, encourage your client to press their thumb and forefinger together as they feel fully at peace. Over time, they’ll associate this gesture with calm.
- Teach them to use this anchor during stressful moments to ground themselves instantly. (Bonus: They’ll think you’re a wizard.)
Anchors are powerful because they tap into the rule of association. The key is to attach the anchor to a specific and meaningful state, not just any passing feeling. Otherwise, you might end up accidentally anchoring annoyance, which… isn’t ideal. Trust me. Learned that one the hard way.

Chunking: The Art of Big Picture and Tiny Details
Chunking is all about moving between levels of specificity. When you chunk up, you zoom out to see the bigger picture. When you chunk down, you zero in on the nitty-gritty details. It’s like having a Google Maps of the mind—sometimes you need a street view; sometimes you need to see the whole continent.

At its core, chunking is about combining ideas together. In cognitive psychology, chunking is the process by which small, individual pieces of information are bound together to create a meaningful whole later on in memory. It’s how your brain turns a jumble of unrelated bits into something cohesive and useful—kind of like assembling IKEA furniture, but way less frustrating (usually).

Practical Example: Chunking in Action
Let’s say your client feels stuck in a pattern of avoidance.
- Chunking Up: Explore the broader emotional landscape. Ask, “What’s the overarching fear driving this avoidance?” This helps clients see how their actions fit into a larger story.
- Chunking Down: Get specific about the triggers. “What’s one situation where you felt this avoidance strongest?” Drill down into details to find actionable steps.
Just like grouping frogs and fish as cold-blooded vertebrates (a fact that still blows my mind, by the way), chunking helps clients see connections they’ve never noticed before. It opens doors for profound self-awareness and healing.

How Anchors and Chunking Work Together

Here’s where the magic happens. You can use chunking to create anchors that work on multiple levels. For example, if your client is working on improving confidence:

1. CHUNK UP
Link the idea of confidence to their larger goals, like building stronger relationships or thriving in their career.

2. CHUNK DOWN
Identify specific moments when they felt confident—a successful presentation, a kind compliment, or even rocking karaoke night.
|
3. CREATE AN ANCHOR
Use a word, gesture, or visualization to connect them to that feeling of confidence across all levels.

Suddenly, they have a tool that not only reminds them of their confidence but also ties it to a bigger vision of who they want to be.
