Hi There, Therapist Friend,
Let’s talk about one word that terrifies most trauma survivors.
It’s tiny. It’s simple. But for many clients, it feels dangerous. Somewhere in their past, someone ignored their “no.” Maybe it was brushed aside, mocked, or punished. So now, every “no” needs an explanation. They can’t say it clean. They have to decorate it. “No, because I’m busy.” “No, because I tried that already.” “No, because I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings.”`
They think saying no is selfish. But it’s not. It’s sacred.
When a client justifies every no, what they’re really saying is, “I only have value when I’m useful.” That belief sits deep. It’s the seed of burnout, resentment, and people-pleasing. You’ve seen it, clients who over-give, overthink, and then collapse under the weight of being everyone’s emotional support animal.

So, How Do We Help Them
Rebuild That Boundary?
Start simple. Have them practice micro no’s. Small, everyday rejections that carry no danger. “No, I don’t want another cup of coffee.” “No, I’m not free this weekend.” “No, I’m good, thanks.” Each time they say no without an essay attached, they retrain the nervous system. The body learns that no doesn’t lead to abandonment, instead it leads to peace.
As a hypnotherapist, you can amplify this lesson.
Under trance, invite the subconscious to recall the first time their no was ignored. Not to relive it, but to reframe it. Let them see that moment through adult eyes. Show now anchors safety instead of shame.
Remember, when a client says no, to the demands and expectations of others, they’re reclaiming themselves.
And honestly? You need this too.
You can say no to extra clients.
No to unpaid labor.
No to guilt-driven “yeses.”
Every no protects the part of you that does your best work, the calm, present, attuned part.
So go ahead. Try it right now.
Say no.
Breathe.
Notice the relief.
Feels pretty good, doesn’t it?
