Hey there, Change-Makers!
We all know self-sabotage when we see it. Clients walk in, do their best to move forward, and somehow end up blocking their own path like it’s their full-time job. But here’s the catch—it’s not just because they enjoy making things harder on themselves (promise).

Self-sabotage is actually the subconscious at work, trying to keep them safe in a way that’s about as effective as a screen door on a submarine. So, let’s dive into how to shift this pattern with empathy, strategy, and a touch of well-placed trance work.

Step 1: Appreciate the Purpose Behind Self-Sabotage
Look, I know: some behaviors make you want to ask, “Are you trying to make your life harder?” But here’s the thing: every behavior, even the most self-defeating, serves a purpose. Self-sabotage is often a way to keep clients from facing an underlying fear or stepping outside their comfort zone. As therapists, the first step is to view these behaviors with empathy and curiosity.
Yes, it might feel like their inner saboteur deserves a stern talking-to, but trust me—the sabotage is often trying to accomplish something good (even if it’s completely missing the mark). Let’s dig in and ask, “What’s the goal here, and how can we redirect this energy toward something a bit more… helpful?”

Step 2: Identify the Core Lie
Now we get to the juicy part. Trauma tends to create what we call a “core lie”—a distorted belief that has wormed its way into their subconscious, holding them back. This lie might sound like, “I’m not enough,” or “I don’t deserve happiness.” You get the idea. Clients often have no clue this lie is there, sabotaging their best efforts from behind the scenes. All they know is that things aren’t working out, and somehow, it’s always their own doing. Fun times, right?
By helping clients identify this core lie, we start to expose the self-sabotage for what it really is: a defense mechanism based on outdated information. Once they see that this belief doesn’t match reality (or any objective version of the world), we’re one step closer to changing the script.

Step 3: Reframe & Implant a New Core Belief – The Four-Step Process
Alright, so now we’ve unearthed the lie. Let’s replace it with something a bit more constructive! Here’s the four-step approach:
1. DEPONTENTIATION
Time to shake things up! We start by disrupting their usual thought pattern, grabbing their attention, and opening up the subconscious for change. Think of it as creating a bit of “brain static” so the old belief loses its grip. (And yes, if it sounds confusing, that’s because it’s meant to be!)
2. DEEPEN THE TRANCE
Here’s where we take things up a notch. Through alternating tension and relaxation, plus a little extra confusion, we deepen the trance to bring them into closer contact with their subconscious. By now, they’re so deep that their regular mental defenses have taken a nice little nap.
3. INTRODUCE THE NEW CORE BELIEF
Once they’re open and receptive, we introduce a healthier belief. Something grounded in reality, like, “I am worthy of success,” or “I deserve good things.” We let them really feel what life would be like with this belief in place, allowing it to feel so real they can almost touch it. This is their chance to see the light at the end of the self-sabotage tunnel.
4. POST-HYPNOTIC SUGGESTION
Finally, we anchor this new belief with a post-hypnotic suggestion to make sure it sticks long after they’ve left the session. This lasting suggestion gently nudges them toward healthier patterns, like an invisible hand guiding them away from the same old traps they’ve been falling into.

Final Encouragement
Remember, self-sabotage isn’t the enemy—it’s just a well-intentioned but misinformed strategy their brain has held onto a little too tightly. With these steps, you’re not just helping clients break free from their own traps—you’re helping them see that, at the end of the day, they’re capable of so much more than they thought.
You’re a therapist, sure, but you’re also a bit of a magician. And if anyone can pull a rabbit out of the hat, it’s you.
