Fear as a Trance

The power of horror movies lies in their ability to put us into a deeply entrancing state, where we’re immersed, heart racing, expecting the next jump scare.

In the same way, fear and anxiety can trap clients in a trance-like loop of worry, catastrophizing, and self-doubt. And just like in a horror movie, they end up reliving these intense scenes over and over.

Depotentiating Fear

This is where we come in. As hypnotherapists, our job is to break that trance of fear—to shock clients out of it. No, this doesn’t mean putting on a clown mask and jumping out from behind a couch (although it’s tempting). Instead, we use techniques that “shock” the frame of reference, disrupting those engrained thought loops so they can finally breathe

By shifting their perspective, we help them rewrite the horror script they’re living with a plotline that’s a little less Hitchcock and a little more hero’s journey.

Creating a Healthier Story

When you break someone out of a fear trance, you’re doing more than just snapping your fingers or getting them to see things differently. You’re giving them the chance to create a whole new story about who they are and what’s possible in their lives.

It’s the magic of storytelling but with them as the hero—complete with courage, resilience, and maybe even a plot twist they never saw coming.

So this Halloween, as you’re dodging ghosts and ghouls, remember: the real horror movie is the one we play in our heads. And, thankfully, as hypnotherapists, we get to rewrite the script.
