We have discussed that anchoring is a means by which our minds explore and understand the world within which we live. An anchor is a strong association between an emotion and a sensory experience during memory development. We know that these anchors can be created beyond our conscious awareness, deep within our unconscious mind, and they follow patterns or laws of association. An anchor is also strengthened when it recurs or is reinforced.
But there are times when such associations in your unconscious mind may wreak havoc in your life where little to no meaning can be found in your conscious understanding to explain them. Where do you turn when painful moments are triggered, phobic reactions rule decision-making, or patterns of your behavior appear sometimes downright self-destructive? Where can you go when logic cannot explain recurring difficulties in life, leaving you feeling out of control or helpless?
This is where a therapist incorporating hypnosis into treatment can be beneficial. Talk therapy is very effective in treating a wide range of problems, but it would make the most sense to meet the problem where it originated: in your unconscious mind.
Hypnosis allows your therapist to bypass your conscious mind and access your unconscious mind, where the problem resides. One method of counteracting negative associations in your life is to fight fire with fire by establishing new anchors within a trance state. Establishing positive anchors in trance can negate the negative associations which have been creating distress in your life. This allows you to rethink your problems at an unconscious level, discovering new associations which work best for you in your own life. Negative anchors can pin you down, holding you fast to fear and negativity and destructive decision-making. This can be accomplished through hypnotic anchors which empower you by promoting self-confidence and strength, rather than fear or self-loathing.
It is a process which can be very individualized to your own needs. Addressing your troubles through hypnosis allows for the unconscious mind to solve its own problems on its level, without interference from the conscious mind. It is difficult to correct that which we are unaware of. The difficulty is that the impact of unconscious negative associations through anchoring can play out in our day-to-day lives. Hypnotherapy allows you to meet these negative associations where they live and recreate more adaptive and life-sustaining associations for a more fulfilling existence
